Jesús Rafael Soto
13 October to 12 December 2008

Robert Sandelson is pleased to announce a retrospective exhibition of works by Jesús Rafael Soto (1923- 2005), one of the most important kinetic artist of the 20th century. The show will be held in our Cork Street gallery from 13 October to 28 November 2008 and is the first significant exhibition of Soto's work in London for forty years.

Jesús Rafael Soto strove to create optical movement in his paintings and constructions. By the end of the 1950s he had developed an idiom in which squares, painted perspex or pieces of wire are placed in front of a background of thin parallel lines, causing the objects to vibrate visually with the movement of the viewer.

Alongside the exhibition there will be an editioned work entitled Maquette for Sphere Theospacio, newly released by the estate.

The work relates to the artist’s renowned Volumes series, an important body of sculptures and installations, where suspended metal rods painted in different colors evoke the illusion of a hovering volume, usually a cube or a sphere.
