Biography

1928   Born Andrew Warhola on 6 August 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
1937   Warhol’s grade school teacher recommends him for the prestigious Carnegie Museum Saturday art courses, which he starts attending.
1945   Warhol graduates from Schenley High School, enrols in Carnegie Mellon University where he majors in pictorial design. He starts working in the Joseph Horne department store on the side and in the summer. In his senior year he works as a picture editor for the student magazine Caro.
1949   Graduates from university and moves to New York, USA. He starts commissioned design illustrations on major glossy magazines like Vogue, Seventeen, and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as window dressing and book illustration.
1952-54   He receives the Art Directors Club medal and the Certificate of Excellence from the American Institute of Graphic Arts for his commercial art.
1958-60   Establishes Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc.
1961-62   Warhol starts his celebrated thirty-two Campbell’s Soup Cans, and follows this with the Disasters series, paintings of Coke bottles, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe.
1963-65   Warhol produces the Mona Lisa series, including Thirty are Better than One, and the Electric Chair, Race Riot, and Jackie pictures. He sets up the Factory in a former fire station on East 87th street. Produces his first films, including Empire, Batman, The Thirteen Most Beautiful Girls, and The Thirteen Most Beautiful Boys.
1966-67   Produces the Cows, Chelsea Girls film, and the Electric Chair suite as well as the Velvet Underground’s first album.
1968-70   Seriously wounded in shooting by Valerie Solanas, Factory member and founder of S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men). Survives but never fully recovers from his wounds.
1970-72   His work is shown in major museum retrospectives across the world. Produces his Mao series, and the films Heat, and Flesh for Frankenstein. Warhol’s mother Julia dies at the age of 80.
1973-76   Begins to assemble Time Capsules, boxes filled with everyday objects, which he stores away. Works on Ladies and Gentlemen, and Skulls.
1977-78   Produces the Celebrity portraits, and the Hammer and Sickle series. The dadaist action Oxidation and Shadow paintings follow.
1979-81   Works on the first Joseph Beuys portraits, Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, Reversals, Crosses, Dollar Signs, Guns, Knives, and Fate Presto. ‘Andy Warhol’s TV’ shown on cable television.
1982-85   Produces Collaboration Works with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente, Animals, Renaissance, Munch, and Rorschach paintings. His Ads pictures follow. Produces his Invisible Sculpture work at ‘Area’ nightclub.
1986   Produces the Lenin and Camouflage pictures, and new self-portraits.
1987   On the 22 February, Warhol unexpectedly dies due to complications
following a gall bladder operation and an allergic reaction to penicillin.
