Biography

1931   Born in London, England.
1939-45   Childhood in Cornwall.
1946-48   Educated at Cheltenham Ladies College, Cheltenham, England.
1949-52   Goldsmiths College, London, England.
1952-55   Royal College of Art, London, England.
1965   Plays a leading role in the ground breaking exhibition ‘The Responsive Eye’ at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA.
1968   Wins the International Prize for Painting at the XXXIV Venice Biennale. She is the first British contemporary painter and the first woman ever to achieve this distinction.
1971-73   Undertakes numerous journeys throughout Europe to study the works of Old Masters at first hand, including Titian, Tiepolo, Grünewald, Altdorfer and Rubens.
1974-77   Divides her time between London and Cornwall. Visits Japan and India.
1979-80   Period of extensive travel, including a visit to Egypt to look at the ancient burial sites in the Nile Valley.
1981   Appointed a Trustee of the National Gallery in London and serves to 1988. She lectures both on her work and that of artists from the past.
1993   Honorary Doctor of the University of Oxford, England.
1994   Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge, England.
1999   In the New Year’s Honours, appointed a Companion of Honour.
2000-01   Co-curates Paul Klee exhibition with Robert Kudielka for the Hayward Gallery, London.
    Bridget Riley continues to live and work in London, Cornwall and France.
