Biography

1918   Born in Catanzaro, Italy.
1941-45   Naples Art Academy, Italy.
1951-52   First one man show at Galleria Chiaruzzi, Rome, Italy.
Fulbright scholarship at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, USA.
1954   First exhibition of ‘Torn Posters’.
1954-60   Lives in Rome, Italy.
1961   Joins the Nouveaux Réalistes (Arman, Cesar, Christo, Deschamps, Dufrene, Hains, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Spoerri, Tinguely, Villegle).
1964   Moves to Paris where he begins to work with emulsified canvases which in 1965 he named Mec Art.
1970   First Artypo works.
1980   Leaves Paris and moves to Milan where he develops his ‘Blanks’ works.
1989   DAAD invitation to Berlin, Germany.
1992   Awarded The Officiel des arts et des Lettres by French minister for Culture, Jack Lang.
1997   Dedicates a cycle of works to movie director Federico Fellini, entitled ‘Felliniana’.
2000   Mimmo Rotella Foundation is established at the request of the artist with the aim of collecting, classifying and restoring works and documentation.
2001   Takes part at Venice Biennale’s ‘Platea dell’Umanita’ directed by Harald Szeemann.
2002   Awarded the gold medal for visual arts by Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, president of Italian Republic.
2006   January 8th, Mimmo Rotella dies in Milan.
