Biography

1923   Born June 25th in San Mateo, California, USA.
1950   MA University of California, Berkeley, USA.
1946–50   Begins painting in San Francisco, USA.
1950–58   Lives and works in Paris, France with travels to Mexico, Japan, and Europe.
1959   Lives in New York City and works on the Chase Manhattan Bank mural.
1959–61   Lives in Bern, Switzerland.
1961   Moves to Santa Monica, California, which becomes his permanent home.
1968   Honorary PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
1969-71   Paints and installs the commissioned mural for the Nationalgalerie, West Berlin, Germany.
1970   Establishes the Litho shop in Santa Monica to print and publish his own lithographs.
1973-74   Lives primarily in Tokyo, Japan.
1975-77   Begins collaboration with Garner Tullis on monotypes.
1980   Becomes part of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA.
1983   Completes the San Francisco Airport Mural.
1984   Establishes Lapis Press to publish artists’ books.
1985   Completes mural for the San Francisco Museum of Art.
1993   Major donation of ten paintings to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, USA.
1994   Dies November 4th in Santa Monica, USA.
